20 Children’s Books About Love

Children's books about love

Reminding children how much they are loved is one thing you can never do too much. Besides telling children they are loved and showing your love for them in every which way, it’s important to put love into context for them, helping them understand what love is and how to give and receive it.

For Valentine’s Day this year, maybe instead of getting the little ones in your life chocolate or candy or toys that they probably have enough of already, share a new book with them about love, which is what Valentine’s Day truly celebrates. Not to mention, 90% of these books aren’t valentine’s day specific, so they are fitting year-round!

Shared in this post are some of my favorite children’s books about love, as well as some favorites of my sister, who is a mom of three, and my mom, who is a mom of four with three grand-babies (soon to be four including the one in my belly!). Below you will find two sections of books: The first section contains a variety of lovely board books, perfect for toddlers. The second section contains a variety of hardcover books, ideal for young children ages 4-6 years old.

Valentine’s Day Gifts for New Parents

These books are also great gift ideas for expectant parents. I actually bought the Daddy Hugs Board Book by Karen Katz for my husband for Valentine’s Day this year. We are expecting our first baby in May and we are both so excited to be new parents. We don’t be heavy gifting for each other for Valentine’s Day and usually just celebrate our love by going out to a nice dinner sometime around Valentine’s Day. However this year, after finding this book, I found it to be so sweet and perfectly fitting for me to gift him this year, that I couldn’t say no. Not to mention, it was a grand total of $5.79.

One of the best things about gifting these books to your littles for Valentine’s Day is that they are inexpensive. Gifting books to children is always a good idea for a few reasons:

  1. Books have a long shelf life. All parents know that books will be read time and time again (and maybe even hundreds of times if they become a favorite), making them a gift that is the opposite of a trendy or one-time-use toy.
  2. Books promote learning. This one is rather obvious, but still worth stating. Books promote cognitive functions and spread knowledge. They help children learn concepts and new words, ultimately helping them better understand the world around them and themselves.
  3. Books can be reused. Once a child outgrows a book, it can either be handed down to their young siblings, given to friends, or donated, extending their life and passing on the book’s stories to more children.

    1. I totally agree, Supal! I tried to include some more classic titles along with fun, light-hearted ones as well. Teaching compassion is invaluable. Thank you for reading and for taking the time to comment! <3

  2. It’s good for kids to learn about love and compassion while they’re still young. This is nice.

  3. such a cute list of must read books perfect for a rainy day!

  4. I absolutely love this concept of putting love into context for them. I think it is so important to teach them this at a young age, especially of how different love can be shown. And it teaches them compassion and empathy in my opinion, great list!
